Customizing start menu:


Start menu can be customized easily to your like, things you can’t change is Turn off computer, Help and support, search, control panel. Start menu is stored in your os drive at C:\Documents and Settings.
To add a shortcut to the start menu right click on .exe file and select pin to start menu (appears on left side top of start menu).
To add a program to the program menu create short cut and place shortcut in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or drag the shortcut and place it start menu
To remove a shortcut to the start menu right click on the folder or the menu and select delete. To remove a shortcut in left side of the start menu right click on the menu and select remove from the list. (You can’t remove menu items on right side.
To rearrange the menu, just drag and place it in the required order.
To rename right click and select rename, type the new name and press enter.

To change the start menu appearance to classic start menu right click in task bar and select properties in property dialog box select classic start menu under start menu tab.
For other customization click customize button.
To choose the icon size in start menu click customize in start menu tab, in customize start menu dialog box select either large icon or small icons. You select number of program shortcut on start menu that you often use using the spinner button or entering the value. To clear the program shortcuts click clear list.
It also has option to show internet (select the require program you use in drop down menu) shortcut and email (select the require program you use in drop down menu) enable them by using the check box.
To display control panel as a menu click advanced tab (in customize start menu dialog box) select display as a menu under control panel in start menu items lists.
To enable dragging and dropping items in start menu select enable dragging and dropping check box.
To enable favorites menu select Favorites menu check box
Favorite menu: It displays most frequently used files. You can add any file to your favorite menu. It is stored in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Favorites, you can add required folders and shortcuts to this folder to add items to favorite menu or drag your shortcut and place it in favorite menu.
To remove support and help menu item uncheck help and support check box.
You also have option for My Computer, My Documents, My Music, My Pictures My network and System administrative tools connection to display it as link, as a menu or remove this item select respective check box.
To remove network places icon from your start menu uncheck My network places.
To scroll programs (appears in single list and scrolls down or up when you move your cursor) select scroll programs check box.
