Handling files


Windows explorer is similar to your web browser which is used to view and manipulate files and folders. Parts of my computer are

Title bar: Displays the name of your folder

Menu bar: Has various menus which can be used for various functions

Status bar: Status bar shows the status of your current window

The task Pane: Presents easy way to do task. It contains options depending on your folder type.

Explorer bar: It displays all the folders in a tree view.

Generally my computer shows all the parts of your computer which includes your hard drive, CD ROM, floppy drive, network drives etc. To open respective drives double click in the explorer window.

To open each folder in separate window click tools in the menu bar and folder option select open folder in its own window. Or to open in same window select open folder in same window.

Copy and paste:
select the file you have to copy and right click or press shift + F10 and select copy or press CTRL + c. To paste the files right click or press shift + F10 and select paste or press CTRL+ v.

To move the folder from one folder to other select the folders you have to move(to select multiple files press ctrl and select files when you have to select files in a row press shift and select first and last files) and click edit in the menu bar or press alt + e and select move to folder and select the required folder you have to move.

To copy the folder to required folder select edit or press alt + e and click copy to folder.

You can copy folder by drag and drop. To do that select the files and drag the files to the required folder by opening it in a separate window.

Cut and paste: Cut as the name suggest will move the file to the new folder when pasted in the required folder.

Creating new files and folder

You can create any number of folders and files in windows xp based on size of your disk. To create a new folder right click and select new and folder or click file in menu bar or press alt + f new and folder. To create a file such as Microsoft word, wav audio, briefcase, right click and select new and respective files it will create blank files.

File sharing in a network
To share files in a network, place your files in the share documents folder or right click by selecting the folder and click sharing and click the check box share this folder on the network (be sure of security) you could see the change in icon.
